EmpowHER our Girls

This program is made possible by Grantmakers for Girls of Color


Empowering young girls to be their best selves. This program is specifically for young girls of color, in two cohorts of 6-8 and 9-12 grades. Girls are taught 2-3 of the following classes: Girls Who Code, Creative Writing, yoga, Wellness, various arts disciplines, and Hair/Skin Care. Guest speakers are featured on a weekly basis to talk about their journey to success and what their personal wellness routine.

This program provides the tools for self-care, confidence, and the value of empowering others through community service. An empowHERed girl gains the confidence to express herself in the company of her peers as well as adults, and with mentoring, she understands that she can do and be anything she sets her mind to. Each week will feature a guest speaker – an influential female leader from the Peoria area and beyond.  

What’s Offered:

  • Creative Writing: girls will get to express themselves through poetry, short stories, and journaling.

  • Arts Education: each week the girls will focus on a different discipline of the arts such as, painting, photography, improv/theater, sewing, cricut, cooking, ceramics, STEAM activities, and more

  • Yoga: girls will practice various forms of yoga which combines experiencing their own body strength, relaxation, and mindfulness.
  • Community Service: girls will participate and create community service projects

  • Guest Speakers: each week successful women will share their journey to success and what they do for self-care.
  • Field Trips: girls will take field trips and we’ll celebrate the conclusion of the program with a trip to Chicago!
